Laura’s work.
Laura Harrison is a licensed mental health counselor in New York State (License #015798). She achieved her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Antioch University New England in 2022. She also has successfully completed some doctoral courses in Clinical Psychology prior to that. She specializes in working with individual adults, children and their families, and couples. She uses an emotion-focused, trauma-informed relational perspective with lots of psychoeducation to empower clients in their autonomy, growth, and self-efficacy.
Laura embraces and respects all forms of diversity, and centers a client’s identity as valid. She also uses developmental, and person-in-environment lenses to make sure to best serve the client as a whole individual rather than blame them for aspects of their experience which are beyond their control.
Laura actually began her career in the early 2000s. She holds certifications in group fitness, personal training, and yoga, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art. Laura has taught and practiced mindfulness meditation and relaxation techniques since 2005. She uses these tools to inform an approach to therapy that enhances a client’s attunement to their nervous system and how their nervous system, thoughts, and emotions intertwine, to work more effectively to manage stress and mood. She is happy to take creative approaches to traditional talk therapy tailored to each client’s needs within her scope of practice.
Laura hopes to empower clients to gain clarity and to form a trusting and warm relationship with themselves as the foundation of all relationships and overall well-being. She chose the name “Nature Nurture Mental Health Counseling” to describe her emphasis on farming natural strengths and proclivities that serve the client intrinsically (nature) and teaching them tools, perspectives, strategies, and information that help the client bolster or gain abilities and insights they did not yet have the opportunity to obtain (nurture), in order to achieve the most robust sense of meaningful aliveness possible.
